Mucking of the gravitated material at the shaft bottom done with an LHD. Very poor ground conditions caused fall of material from the sidewall approx 110m below surface. A custom designed fabricated steel pipe form and grouting from surface was used to consolidate this section. Duration 6 months.

Gencor. Reference: I. McFarlane. Provision of Temporary Works winding gear and steelwork. Sink using hand held jackhammers and mucking done with Eimco 630 lashing into kibbles. Extensive emergency design and consolidation work carried out from surface for 7m wide x 4m high decline. Drilling and installation of cable anchors from surface and pumping of concrete to a custom designed shutter in the decline pre-fixed with reinforcing to support incompetent ground. Duration 14.5 months
340m long, 2.1m diameter reef raise
Client: R&D Anglo Platinum – BRPM mine. Primary purpose was to establish cutter costs. Temporary works included the construction of a structural steel assembly ramp and concrete works for initial gripping. The 2.1m, 340m long dia. raise was bored at between 14 and 17 degrees on the Merensky reef using a 1976 model Robbins Jarva MK6 gripper TBM (First time a TBM used for reef raising in SA). Best hour advance 1.33m. Best day advance 13.8m. Flammable gas detection contolled by on board sensor. Spot bolting, although planned for, was not necessary, Average penetration rate 0.47m per utilised hour. Resultant cutter life was better than expected. Duration 5 months. The TBM was designed for civil tunneling. For purposes of the trial it was considered a success and pointed to the great potential of the technology. Specific considerations to logistics, ventilation and removal of spoil etc. are being given for PGM mine environments in developing specific equipment.

A tower crane was used for hoisting rock and material. The shaft, sunk from surface, holed through into an existing sub-vertical shaft. The steelwork and guides were required to align with the existing installation with tight tolerances. Duration 6 months.

Scope included bleeding, blasting of oversized rocks, installation of support where required, formwork and placing 645m³ 40mPA & 70mPA / 90mPA andesite lava concrete including pinning & reinforcement. Scope: 210m deep, 3.2m concrete lined vertical shaft & sampling drives at 117m lvl (150m long) &
200m lvl (80m long). A concrete plug was constructed in the 117m lvl drive that reduced the unexpected 260m³ ground water inflows to 4m³.hr (fractured zone 50m into the drive required high volumes of cement grout & steel arch support. Exploratory core drilling carried out from the drive and dewatering facilities upgraded. Cover drilling & grouting (cement or chemical) and probe hole regime managed to keep inflows at 10lt.sec. 330 consecutive days without accident with loss of work.
